Team Canada will stand up to Trump tariff threats
As I write, U.S. President Donald Trump has delayed the imposition of 25 per cent tariffs on Canada by 30 days.
Our Liberal government is focused on protecting Canada’s economy, Canadian jobs and Canadian sovereignty from Trump’s tariff threats that would hurt both the Canadian and American economies.
Since President Trump first raised the threat of tariffs against Canada, our priorities have been:
To avoid tariffs;
To prepare to respond to tariffs if necessary; and,
To diversify our economy, and remove internal trade barriers.
Our first goal remains preventing tariffs, but Team Canada is ready with a strong national response if we need one. We’re working together at every level – including with premiers, mayors, as well as industry, labour, and union leaders.
If Trump goes ahead with his threat, Canada will respond to with 25% tariffs on $155B of American goods. — to start.
And we’re making investments to ensure our shared border is secure. We’ve unveiled a $1.3 billion plan to strengthen the integrity of our border. This includes drones and helicopters, improved intelligence sharing, and increased pre-clearance.
These border investments are important because more illegal migrants, illegal drugs and illegal guns come into Canada from the U.S than flow the other way. A more secure border will increase safety for Canadians.
This isn’t a time for rhyming slogans. It’s a time to work together for Canada. So let’s stand together.
Let’s support Canadian businesses and buy Canadian products. Canada strong!
