A great year for Canada Summer Jobs in our community

This right here is one of my favourite activities in the year when we get to gather many young people participating in the Canada Summer Jobs to hear about their experience. Thank you all so much for coming and sharing your feedback on how we can help you transition into the world of employment better. This year, as many as 700 local youth worked with more than 100 local non-profits and community organizations thanks to over $1M in federal funding.

Summer market at Church of St. Andrew

It was wonderful to join our community at the Summer Market & BBQ hosted by the Church of St. Andrew in Scarborough.

This welcoming event brought neighbours together to enjoy great food, support local vendors, and connect in a warm, inclusive atmosphere. Community gatherings like these help build the relationships that make Scarborough such a vibrant place to call home.

Thank you to the organizers, volunteers, vendors, and everyone who made this fantastic event possible. It was a pleasure spending the afternoon with you!

It was a pleasure to join the Canadian Tamil Academy for Aadi Vizha 2026, celebrating the rich traditions, culture, and contributions of the Tamil community in Scarborough.

Opening the East Don Trail

Celebrating the opening of the East Don Trail alongside partners from the City of Toronto  and the Toronto and Region Conservation Authority. Years of incredible collaborative work have unlocked a gorgeous new way to explore our local ravines while preserving our vibrant green spaces for generations to come!

Canada Day was a busy day with celebrations across our community. It was great to see so many people having fun, enjoying the day, and celebrating our home. VIve le Canada!

Working for safer communities

New Statistics Canada data shows crime is declining across Canada. In 2025, the overall crime rate fell by 2%, while the Crime Severity Index also improved, with violent crime down 4% and non-violent crime down 5%.

These results reflect the hard work and dedication of our law enforcement agencies, who work every day to keep our communities safe. While there is always more to do, we should recognize their efforts and continue supporting the tools and resources they need to protect Canadians.

More help for families

Starting in July, the Canada Child Benefit is increasing to help families with the cost of raising children.

Eligible families can now receive up to $8,157 for each child under 6 and up to $6,883 for each child aged 6–17. Indexed to inflation, the CCB continues to put more money back into the pockets of parents while helping cover everyday costs like groceries, clothing, and child care.

We're continuing to build a more affordable Canada for families through the CCB, affordable child care, the Canadian Dental Care Plan, and the permanent National School Food Program.

Making it easier to buy a home

Canada is facing a major housing supply gap, but we are building again.

To keep this momentum going and support workers, our government is providing up to $1.7 billion to provinces and territories. This funding will prevent construction delays, protect skilled labour jobs, and build long-term stability.

We are already seeing real progress. In Ontario, a new rebate has helped sell over 5,400 new homes, pushing single-family sales nearly 50% above the 10-year average and saving buyers up to $130,000.

Fixing the housing market requires everyone working together. By funding projects now, we can stop harmful building cycles and get more homes built for Canadians.

That’s why our government is investing $2 billion over five years to expand training pathways into Red Seal trades, eliminate apprenticeship waitlists, reduce certification backlogs, and help hire up to 100,000 skilled trades workers.

This builds on our Team Canada Strong plan to strengthen our workforce, grow our economy, and build a stronger Canada.

Bringing passenger rail manufacturing back to Canada

For the first time in more than 25 years, passenger rail locomotives will once again be assembled here at home by Canadians, for Canadians.

Our government is investing $1.95 billion to renew VIA Rail’s long-distance, regional and remote locomotive fleet, including 45 new hybrid locomotives, with final assembly of up to 36 taking place right here in Montréal.

The investment also includes $357 million for a new assembly and maintenance facility at VIA Rail’s Montréal Maintenance Centre, supporting the equivalent of 1,200 direct and indirect jobs in manufacturing, construction, engineering, maintenance and the broader Canadian rail supply chain.

These will be North America’s first hybrid-powered passenger locomotives, combining battery and diesel technology. With batteries supplied by ABB’s Saint-Laurent facility, this project is strengthening Canadian manufacturing while building the rail capacity we need for the future.

Most importantly, these new locomotives will deliver more reliable and efficient service to communities across Canada—including Indigenous, rural and remote communities—helping keep Canadians connected from coast to coast to coast.
