A holiday break for Canadians

Canadians are feeling the rising cost of living. Global inflation is driving up the price of necessities such as groceries and rent, and making it harder for families to make ends meet every month.

That’s why starting December 14 and until February 15, we’re giving a tax break to all Canadians.

We’re taking the GST/HST off the groceries you put on your family’s table. This also includes prepared foods like pre-made meals and salads, as well as snacks such a chips and granola bars.

And it’s not just food. Essentials such as children’s clothing and footwear are covered too, as well as restaurant meals or food delivery, just in time for the holidays.

Our government can’t set prices. But we can give Canadians a break.

And with this tax holiday we’re making life a bit easier, so Canadians have more money in their pocket for the things they want.

Supporting Hellenic Home for the Aged

I was honoured to attend Hellenic Home for the Aged’s 24th annual gala dinner. I was delighted to learn about their new initiative which will be bring a much needed new 128 bed long term facility in Scarborough. Thank you for all the work you do!

Remembrance Day in Scarborough

On November 11th, we remember the sacrifice of men and women in uniform, including a few from our very own Scarborough, who gave their lives in service of our country's values and principles. I had the opportunity to join a beautiful, solemn wreath-laying ceremony morning in these brave men and women’s honour. Lest we forget.

Scarborough women have entrepreneurial spirit

Our Scarborough Womens Advisory Group recently held an event focused on entrepreneurship. Small businesses are a major force in Canadian economy, and we’re delighted that so many women from our community have an entrepreneurial spirit and are so willing to learn and try their hand at business. Thank you very much to the Toronto Small Business Enterprise Centre for such a useful and inspiring workshop!

Celebrating Diwali at BAPS Mandir

Always a pleasure visiting BAPS Shri Swaminarayan Mandir, especially during their Diwali and 50th anniversary celebrations. Saw the work of the many members and volunteers in putting together more than 1,000 pieces of various sweets in a stunning display of community fellowship. Happy Diwali!

Kids should not go to school hungry

It’s hard to learn on an empty stomach, and no child should go to school hungry. That’s why we’ve signed an agreement to bring the National School Food Program to Ontario! It will deliver healthy meals to 160,000 more kids in Ontario this school year.

Canada Carbon Rebate for small businesses

Eligible small- and medium-business owners will receive tax-free Canada Carbon Rebate for Small Businesses payments starting November 25.

The Canada Carbon Rebate for Small Businesses is delivering over $2.5 billion in tax-free payments to about 600,000 Canadian businesses by returning fuel charge proceeds from 2019-20 through 2023-24.

Small businesses that have filed their tax return and are in jurisdictions where the federal fuel charge applies will automatically receive direct deposits from the CRA.

Putting more money in the pockets of Canadians and small businesses is a key part of the federal government’s economic plan.

This holiday season, a little bit more money in Canadians’ pockets will help them afford the things they need and save for the things they want.

As part of Lebanese Heritage Month in November, we raised the Lebanese flag on Parliament Hill. As we celebrate Lebanese heritage and culture this month, we also stand with the community deeply worried for their loved ones in harm’s way and we pray for peace and justice.

Canada is proud to be home to more than 825,000 Hindus, making Hinduism the 3rd largest religion in Canada.

We will always stand with the Hindu-Canadian community to ensure their safety and security, so they can practice their religion freely and proudly.
