Statement regarding the recent executions by the government of Saudi Arabia
April 25, 2019
Statement by Member of Parliament Salma Zahid – Scarborough Centre
I strongly condemn in the strongest possible terms the recent execution of 37 people by the government of Saudi Arabia, and I am deeply disturbed by this gross violation of the norms of international human rights. The fact that some of the victims were minors at the time of their alleged offences makes this action even more cruel.
I join our government, the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and the international community in my opposition to this action by Saudi Arabia. It is incumbent on the international community to make clear to the Saudi government our opposition to this gross violation of human rights.
Canada opposes the death penalty in all forms. I have raised the concerns of my constituents on this issue directly with Global Affairs Minister Chrystia Freeland, and I know that the Minister and our government has and will always stand up for human rights and freedom of expression.
