Statement on Easter Sunday terror attacks in Sri Lanka
April 21, 2019
Statement by Member of Parliament Salma Zahid – Scarborough Centre
On Easter Sunday, a holy day for those of the Christian faith, it is saddening to learn of the acts of violent terror in Sri Lanka that targeted members of the Christian community while they practised their faith in peace.
Easter is meant to be a time of compassion and kindness, marking the death and resurrection of Jesus, and a time of reflection on his message of goodwill toward our fellow man. It is a cowardly act of hate to make this a time of violence.
My heart and my prayers are with the people of Sri Lanka, and with the Christian community in Sri Lanka and in Canada that is mourning after these attacks.
I know that Canadians will stand with the people of Sri Lanka in standing up to hate and terror, and to those who would use violence to seek to divide us for their own hateful ends. We stand together, united, in condemning terrorism and violent extremism.
An Inter-Faith Vigil for the Easter Sunday Attacks in Sri Lanka will be held on Monday, April 22
nd from 7:00 to 8:00 PM at the Malvern Methodist Church, 2 Morningview Trail, Scarborough. Please join the Scarborough community in standing in solidarity with the people of Sri Lanka and our Christian brothers and sisters.
